How to use Medela nipple shields

Medela nipple shields consist of two parts: a soft, flexible silicone membrane that feels comfortable against sensitive skin, and an outer shell with ventilation holes that allows the skin to breathe. These two parts fit together easily:

Place the membrane over the outer cup and make sure it fits snugly around the edge. Place the assembled nipple shield inside the bra, with the membrane opening centered over the nipple. The holes should face upward.

Nipple shields may collect some breast milk during use. You should not feed this milk to your baby. Discard it when cleaning the shields (see below).

Cleaning the nipple shields

As with all breastfeeding accessories, hygiene is important. Before using nipple shields for the first time, and once a day thereafter, disinfect them by following these quick and easy steps:

Place the separate nipple shield pieces in a small saucepan with cold water. Distilled water is the best option, but if you're using tap water, you can add a teaspoon of citric acid to prevent limescale buildup. Boil the water for five minutes. Carefully drain the water and allow the nipple shield pieces to dry on a clean cloth. You can also use a Medela Quick Clean™ microwave bag.

You should also clean the nipple shields after each use. Separate the pieces and wash them with a mild detergent. Then, rinse them well with cold water and let them dry on a clean cloth.
